Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The aging of residential infrastructure in senior housing in China’s first-tier cities is a critical issue that poses safety hazards to elderly residents. These hazards are attributed to poor color matching, material aging and damage, and surfaces lacking protective and anti-slip features. In response to these challenges, this study employs Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) design principles to conduct safety assessments and proposes design planning for senior housing. (Methods) This study consisted of three primary steps. First, on-site surveys and questionnaires were administered to gather basic information about the target residence and the elderly people living there. Second, on-site observations and third-party inspections were conducted to identify any safety issues that elderly residents might face. Finally, based on the identified safety issues, appropriate design planning proposals and strategies were proposed to enhance the safety of elderly residents. (Results) The investigation of two financed houses (60m2 and 70 m2) revealed significant differences in the CMF safety renovation planning of houses with different types and lighting conditions. Neither apartment type met the standard 7:1 ratio specified in the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) color contrast test, thereby posing potential visual safety risks. Wood materials are susceptible to moisture damage; hence, the use of wood materials with 8–15% moisture content is recommended, and other materials should meet the specified requirements for strength and environmental protection. Materials used for residential floors or walls should have a plane convexity and concavity of ≤2.0 mm and meet the anti-slip standard with a granular texture on the surface to reflect an anti-slip and protective effect for the elderly. (Conclusion) First, a corresponding CMF renovation design was proposed based on different residential layouts and lighting conditions. Second, an increase in the brightness and contrast of spatial color (C) can reduce the occurrence of accidents caused by visual problems in seniors. Additionally, using strong contrast and low-saturation color schemes in color selection can increase the visual safety and comfort of seniors. Third, the material (M) can ensure the safety of long-term residences for the elderly while meeting the necessary durability and environmental conditions. Finally, the smoothness, cushioning, and anti-slip performance of the material finish (F) enhanced the safety of the senior passage. This study is a continuation of the ‘Study on Residential Space Situation Safety for the Senior Citizen in Chinese Based on CMF. ’ This study provides a reference for research and practice of elderly housing safety in Chinese and Asian cities.
