Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In recent years, the problem of population aging in China has become serious, and the quality of life of older persons has received increasing attention. Due to declining cognitive and physical functions, older persons are more vulnerable than younger persons to complex environments; however, the current neighborhood spatial environment in Chinese residential areas is inadequate to support older persons, which may hinder their independence in daily life. Therefore, this study proposed design improvements for neighborhood spaces using IPA analysis to study older persons in Chinese residential areas from the perspective of cognitive health environment design. (Methods) First, six elements of cognitive health design were derived through a literature review. Second, we identified the neighborhood space configuration of age-friendly residential areas according to current regulations in China and generated a questionnaire. Third, a survey was conducted among older residents of age-friendly communities in China. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0. (Results) Based on the results of the analysis, 13 "intensive improvement items" and 8 "gradual improvement items" were identified. The safety improvement items primarily focused on the two aspects of activity safety and crime safety, whereas the sensory improvement items focused on providing beneficial stimulation. Convenience focused on spatial proximity and ease of access to facilities, and social focused on encouraging social activity. The comfort improvement items focused on microclimate comfort and cleanliness, while the familiarity improvement items focused on reflecting local characteristics and promoting a sense of belonging. (Conclusions) First, cognitive health design in Chinese residential neighborhoods should prioritize convenience, comfort, and safety. To improve convenience, the difficulty and steps of tasks should be reduced to support declining performance. Comfort should be improved by reducing distracting stimuli to support reduced attention and performance. To improve safety, enhancements should be made in terms of reduced attention, visuospatial abilities, and performance. Second, the sensory and familiarity gap values were large; therefore, sensory stimulation should be used to improve sensation and promote multifaceted cognition in older adults. Additionally, the familiarity factor should be improved through design that is beneficial for promoting and strengthening memory. Third, among social factors, items related to inducing social activities require intensive improvement. Emphasis should be placed on strengthening design for situations in which social interaction is reduced because of declining language skills in older adults.
