Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In modern society, urbanization and the expansion of digital environments have intensified disconnection from nature, leading to various mental health issues such as increased stress, depression, and psychological instability. Biophilic design is based on the human instinct to connect with nature and has a positive impact on psychological stability and stress reduction. The purpose of this study is to investigate which biophilic design elements contribute to psychological stability in the process of achieving healing and whether satisfaction is attained as a result of these effects. (Method) First, this study defines the concept and elements of biophilic design through a theoretical review. Second, a survey is conducted among the general public, focusing on psychological stability and satisfaction based on evaluation criteria. Through this process, research hypotheses and models are developed, followed by a case analysis of each element. Third, after the survey, an empirical analysis is conducted using statistical methods with SPSS 26.0’s process macro to assess the impact of biophilic design elements on psychological stability. Finally, case studies are examined to analyze how biophilic design elements are applied to spaces and influence psychological stability. (Results) In this study, biophilic design elements were categorized into direct experience of nature, indirect experience of nature, and spatial/place-based experiences. A mediation analysis using multiple regression techniques revealed that psychological stability partially mediates the relationship between direct experience and satisfaction, while it fully mediates the relationship between spatial/place-based experiences and satisfaction. Therefore, psychological stability serves as a key mediating variable in the relationship between biophilic design elements and satisfaction. (Conclusions) This study is meaningful in that it analyzes the role of psychological stability in applying biophilic design to spaces and examines which aspects of each biophilic design element should be emphasized to achieve satisfaction, based on survey findings. In particular, it confirms that biophilic design is a crucial field for modern individuals experiencing high levels of stress and highlights the necessity of clear plans and programs for its application in spaces. Biophilic design positively influences psychological stability and satisfaction, and it should be established as an essential element in healing space design. Additionally, it should provide practical design guidelines that can be effectively applied by space designers and managers. Future research should further explore the application of this approach in various environments and verify its long-term effects.
