Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Initially, the alpha room in apartments was conceived as additional storage space, however, since 2010, it has evolved to become a significant factor for apartment consumers due to its various options and configurations. This study aims to establish a strategic design direction for the application of alpha rooms in future apartment floor plans based on a survey of apartment alpha rooms' preferences in accordance with changing lifestyles. (Method) Through a comprehensive review of previous studies, questions related to lifestyle, housing satisfaction, preference for apartment alpha rooms, and their perceived importance were organized, and a survey was conducted over a two-week period. (Results) Firstly, over 90% of the study subjects lived in apartments, mainly in 24-34 pyeong. The most preferred housing type was that which emphasized ease of management, with 84.2% favoring apartments. In addition, the lack of storage space was the most common source of dissatisfaction with the current living arrangements. Notably, storage spaces and bathrooms received the lowest satisfaction ratings. Secondly, as a result of investigating the subjects' preferences for alpha room utilization, participants showed a preference for locating these rooms in the living room and kitchen areas. Storage functionality was the most desired, followed by study-oriented and kitchen-reinforcement configurations. Thirdly, there was a difference in the number and location of preferred alpha rooms according to lifestyle. Those inclined toward convenience and a family-oriented lifestyle exhibited a preference for larger living room spaces and integration with the living area. In other words, the demand for the alpha room and the spatial composition differed according to lifestyle along with practicality. (Conclusions) Drawing from the aforementioned findings, we propose the following design guidelines for the incorporation of alpha rooms in future apartment design as follows. Foremost, practical consideration is essential in alpha room design. However, given the considerable variance in demand for alpha room location and utilization based on lifestyle, accurate understanding and practical consideration of users should take precedence in the construction company's planing. Furthermore, the purpose and design of the alpha room should harmoniously converge and be applied. Consequently, a range of options and a three-dimensional spatial analysis and configuration will be necessary. Beyond the spatial limitations of the alpha room, overall variability and customization are needed in the design of apartment structures.
