Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The internal spaces of apartments have continually evolved in function and form in response to social changes, technological advancements, and diversified lifestyles. In particular, after the COVID-19 pandemic, residential spaces have expanded into complex areas for various daily activities, leading to increased interest in spatial elements such as flexibility and storage. Standardized floor plans have shown limitations amid changing family structures, prompting specialized designs that reflect diverse lifestyles. Recently, the rise of “kangaroo households,” where parents and adult children cohabit, has gained attention as a new residential demand. Based on this context, the present study examines the emergence and necessity of specialized designs, analyzes design cases suited to kangaroo households, and presents spatial component types and design directions. (Method) First, this study examines the socio-economic background and chronological evolution of domestic apartment layouts to understand the significance of internal spatial organization. It then defines the concepts of specialized design and kangaroo households by analyzing the contrasting lifestyle characteristics of stability-oriented parents and independence-seeking adult children. Focusing on the floor plans of major domestic brand apartments completed after 2020, this study investigates the spatial composition, design characteristics, and suitability of generational coexistence based on lifestyle reflection. Finally, by synthesizing the analysis, we propose specialized design directions for kangaroo households and highlight the need for structural flexibility and selective spatial separation in multigenerational housing. (Results) The results reveal clear intergenerational differences in lifestyle patterns in kangaroo households, making spatial flexibility and functional separation essential design considerations. Accordingly, five specialized design types were derived: “spatially separated privacy-oriented type,” “multipurpose storage type,” “multifunctional efficiency type,” “culinary integration type,” and “indoor-outdoor connectivity type.” Through case analysis, it was confirmed that specialized design elements were complexly applied to branded apartment floor plans, supporting both coexistence and independence between generations. In particular, the spatially separated privacy-oriented type was found to alleviate generational conflict by securing physical boundaries, the multipurpose storage type provided storage solutions tailored to diverse functional needs, and the multifunctional efficiency type flexibly accommodated differences in generational lifestyles and spatial usage demands, actively reflecting the lifestyle characteristics of kangaroo households. (Conclusions) This study systematically presented specialized apartment floor plan types reflecting the lifestyles of kangaroo households, providing both academic and practical criteria for addressing contemporary residential demands. Its significance lies in offering concrete design directions for multigenerational cohabitation. Future research should expand the applicability by incorporating diverse unit sizes, regional contexts, and empirical data from residents, thereby enhancing the validity and generalizability of the proposed design framework.
