Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The research background of this study encompasses Chinese classical gardens, Chinese traditional philosophy, and aesthetics, with Bai Juyi as the central research subject. The Tang Dynasty was an important stage in the development of Chinese classical garden art. Bai Juyi, as a famous example of a garden artist in the Tang Dynasty, integrated his philosophical aesthetic thoughts and personal feelings into the construction of the garden. The main purpose of this thesis is to explore the oriental traditional philosophy and its ecological aesthetic consciousness in Bai Juyi's gardens and to summarize the development direction of modern oriental gardens according to the humanistic characteristics of Bai Juyi's gardens. (Method) First, through the method of literature analysis, this paper examines the advanced research centered on Bai Juyi's garden culture and traditional philosophical thoughts and understands the oriental traditional philosophical aesthetic thoughts and culture contained therein. Secondly, a case analysis of humanistic characteristics related to modern gardens based on the humanistic characteristics of Bai Juyi's gardens was conducted. Finally, implications for the development direction of the humanistic characteristics of modern gardens are summarized. (Results) Bai Juyi's thought of "Zhong Yin(中隱)" greatly promoted the development of literati gardens and endowed them with the characteristics of reclusive culture for the restoration and imitation of nature. Bai Juyi applied the philosophical thought of "Xujing(虛靜)" to the spatial structure of the garden, and integrated the ecological thought of "Tao follows Nature(道灋自然)" into the layout of the garden. Bai Juyi integrated his unique life experience and aesthetic perception into the garden to create a poetic dwelling with a unique artistic conception. (Conclusions) The retreat culture of the garden is an artificial natural place built by people longing for natural mountains and forests in the city. At the same time, the "Xujing(虛靜)" aesthetics of gardens are all derived from the structure of mountains and rivers in nature and the creation of artistic conception. Therefore, it can be seen that the embodiment of the humanistic characteristics of gardens cannot be separated from the construction of natural ecology. Also, the culture, aesthetics, and natural ecological structure of gardens are the connecting network of mutual influence. The modern garden should pursue natural ecology while paying attention to the embodiment of the humanistic artistic conception of the garden landscape and must continue to develop and disseminate garden art with oriental traditional culture in the world.
