Abstract

(Background and Purpose) As modern cities become denser and more complex, the need for resilient and sustainable urban solutions has become increasingly evident. In response, the integration of architecture and infrastructure—previously considered separate domains—has gained attention as a strategy to overcome the limitations of traditional infrastructure, which often fragments and consumes valuable urban space. Roads and railway facilities, once used solely as transportation corridors, are now being integrated with buildings incorporating commercial, residential, and park functions, forming complex, multi-layered urban environments. Internationally, air rights have facilitated the integration of architectural and infrastructural elements developed at different times. Similarly, in Korea, projects involving the undergrounding of infrastructure and the development of parks above these systems are currently underway. This study focuses on projects where buildings and infrastructure were designed and constructed at different times, with the aim of identifying key insights and understanding how these transformations are reshaping urban architectural environments. (Method) A literature review was conducted to examine the broader architectural context in which infrastructure-architecture integration is taking place. Subsequently, a series of international case studies were analyzed, focusing on projects where buildings were constructed independently of the underlying infrastructure and in different time periods. The analysis covered project background, primary stakeholders, and sectional relationships between the infrastructure and the superimposed structures. (Results) Through case analysis, key information such as infrastructure type, sectional integration, project background, and main stakeholders was collected and synthesized to identify shared characteristics. Three main characteristics emerged. First, infrastructure-only spaces were vertically transformed into multifunctional areas by adding new architectural volumes above transportation systems. Second, previously inaccessible or underutilized areas—limited by the presence of infrastructure—were regenerated and opened to the public through new architectural development. These interventions expanded pedestrian space and created public amenities, including elevated parks, improved riverfront access, and enhanced walkways around train stations. Third, various structural and construction technologies were employed to ensure the safety of both the existing infrastructure and the newly added buildings while preserving infrastructure functionality. Examples include V-shaped columns and prestressed structures for spanning large distances, and steel trusses to protect the underlying infrastructure. (Conclusions) This study confirms that the integration of architecture and infrastructure— especially when constructed at different times—results in both vertical and horizontal urban expansion, supported by innovative structural systems that overcome development constraints. These findings may inform strategic approaches to Korean urban development, particularly as infrastructure undergrounding and subterranean complexity become increasingly significant.
