Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Historical and cultural spaces are not only physical places that reveal the historical traces of a city but also serve as key mediators embodying cultural identity, place memory, and a sense of community belonging. However, these spaces are increasingly challenged by rapid commercialization, inefficient governance, and insufficient public participation amid the currents of urbanization and globalization. In particular, East Asian regions face the critical task of balancing cultural preservation with the demands of modern urban development. In response, this study aims to systematically analyze research trends in regenerative design for historic and cultural spaces from 1994 to 2024, and to compare research keywords, temporal evolution, and regional characteristics between China and the global academic community. The study seeks to provide foundational insights to inform future theoretical and practical directions in this field. (Method) This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of peer-reviewed journal articles from two databases: China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science (WOS). CiteSpace 6.3.R1 was used as the analytical and visualization tool to examine the structural and evolutionary patterns of research topics, focusing on keyword co-occurrence networks, cluster visualizations, keyword intensity and temporal trends, and time-zone mapping. After removing duplicates and validating entries, 646 articles from CNKI and 186 papers from WOS were included in the analysis. (Results) The analysis revealed distinct differences in research directions between China and international studies. Chinese research emphasized policy-driven and application-oriented approaches, focusing on keywords such as “historic district,” “micro-renewal,” and “urban regeneration,” reflecting region-specific strategies. In contrast, international studies adopted interdisciplinary approaches grounded in theory, emphasizing keywords such as “cultural heritage,” “adaptive reuse,” and “governance” to address heritage management in broader urban contexts. Digital methodologies— including “digital placemaking” and “urban transformation”—have emerged as key themes in recent years. While both Chinese and international studies emphasized sustainability and public participation, their approaches and perspectives differed significantly. (Conclusions) This study identifies key limitations in current research, including a lack of interdisciplinary collaboration and insufficient integration between theory and practice. To address these limitations, future research on regenerative design should incorporate emerging technologies such as digital twins and artificial intelligence (AI), promote international collaboration, and develop holistic evaluation frameworks that integrate cultural, social, and economic dimensions. In addition, strengthening public participation and community-based practices is essential for sustainable, heritage-led regeneration of historic and cultural spaces. This study offers practical and theoretical insights by connecting region-specific practices with global theoretical frameworks, providing valuable guidance for future design planning and policy development.
