Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In urban spaces, architectural façades have evolvedbeyond their traditional role as mere structural protectors. They now serve asvisual media that embody the aesthetics, technologies, and socio-culturaltransformations of each era. The advent of digital technologies has redefinedfaçades as 'Hyper Surfaces,' functioning as platforms for information deliveryand cultural content. A representative example is DOOH (Digital Out-Of-Home),where real-time content, interactive features, and artistic expressions areintegrated into building exteriors, contributing to the formation of urbanidentity. This study examines how DOOH media on architectural façadesparticipate in constructing urban identity and aims to establish a qualitativeevaluation system for this purpose. By recognizing DOOH not simply as anadvertising medium but as a medium conveying urban publicness and artisticvalue, this research explores how urban identity is reconstructed withincultural and artistic contexts. (Method) This research approaches the impact of DOOH-integratedarchitectural façades on urban identity formation through three stages. First,a theoretical review traces the genealogy of fa ade theory from ancientstructural boundaries to Gothic symbolism, Semper’s Bekleidung theory, Loos’santi-ornamentation, Venturi’s semiotic architecture, and the digital hypersurface. Media aesthetics theories from scholars such as Yu Won-jun, WalterBenjamin, and Jean Baudrillard are utilized to derive five aesthetic characteristicsof DOOH: replicability/expandability, interactivity, virtuality, placeness, andconvergence. Second, representative cases from four global cities are selectedfor comparative analysis based on these five characteristics, evaluatedqualitatively in terms of symbolism, leadership, diversity, and dataaccessibility. Third, an expert FGI survey was conducted to gather experientialevaluations of how these aesthetic elements influence urban identity formation. The survey, structured on a 5-point Likert scale, was quantitatively analyzedthrough reliability testing, factor analysis, and correlation analysis, leadingto the derivation of an evaluation system for DOOH’s impact on urban identity. (Results) The study confirms that DOOH media on architecturalfa ades function as culturaland artistic mediators beyond technologicaldevices, playing a significant rolein shaping urban identity. Specifically, the elements of placeness, interactivity, and convergence are assessed aseffectively fostering emotionalresonance and participation among urbanresidents, thereby reinforcing localuniqueness and symbolic meaning. The caseanalyses demonstrate that each city'sDOOH strategies contribute to theformation of urban branding and culturallandscapes. (Conclusions) This research theoretically and empirically clarifiesthat DOOH acts as a visualplatform mediating urban publicness and artisticvalue, significantlycontributing to the formation of urban identity. The coreaesthetic propertiesof media aesthetics—replicability/expandability,interactivity, virtuality, placeness, and convergence— create distinctivecultural landscapesin each city, serving as essential criteria for futureurban design and smartmedia strategies. Based on these findings, the studyproposes an evaluationsystem for urban identity formation through DOOH mediaaesthetics, suggestingits practical applicability in policy-making and publicdesign initiatives.
