Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In modern times, as physical and virtual spaces overlap and real-time visual content is projected onto the architectural envelope, people's spatial experience is expanding. In particular, the Media Facade which applies a large-scale display to the architectural envelope has both visual symbolism and information dissemination capabilities, emerging as a key medium that changes the landscape of the city and the user experience. However, this value of media facade works differently from the traditional process of place-making. Modern discourse on placeness highlights the divergence from traditional concepts, and there is a close relationship between the media facade and Marc Auge's theory, which defines the dimension of the 'Non-place'. Therefore, this study analyzed the characteristics through which the media facade is expressed around in the modern urban space, and furthermore, how it is connected with the Non-place of Marc Auge. (Method) As the theoretical framework of the study, the transformation of traditional placeness and Marc Auge's non-place theory were reviewed, and core spatial characteristics(mobility, identity, symbolism) were summarized. Subsequently, the definition, type, and expression characteristics of the media facade(communication, artistry, publicity, media, and location) were extracted, and the relationship with the concept of non-place was derived. The scope of the study focused on analyzing cases of incorporating large media facades into the architectural envelope among the places with symbolic and public roles in the city. In each case, the technical elements, non-place spatial characteristics, and media facades were applied and analyzed, and the connection points of each characteristic were organized as synthesis. (Results) It was discovered that the media facade reinforces mobility and symbolism through large-scale visual media in urban spaces, and performs complex functions of commerce, art, and culture according to the planning and composition of media content. It also acted as a device to reconstruct the boundary between place and non-place by expanding the boundary of the physical space through the combination of real-time communication and artistry, thereby creating a temporary but strong place experience. However, if only the commercial aspect is emphasized, it may act merely as a temporary information delivery medium rather than fostering a meaningful place identity, so care should be taken. (Conclusions) These results suggest that the media facade is an important public design element that affects the modern urban landscape and user experience beyond being a simple advertising tool. This study deepened the academic understanding of the use of digital media in urban space by analyzing the media facade in connection with the theory of place and non-place, and it can be used as foundational data for designing public spaces in cities and establishing media content strategies in the future.
