Abstract
(Background and Purpose) As contemporary society enters the era of new media, Out-of-Home (OOH) advertising has evolved into Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) advertising, incorporating technologies such as telecommunications, networks, and digital displays. DOOH WALLs in public spaces like station plazas have moved beyond their original commercial function to become platforms for artistic creativity and civic engagement. These installations now serve as hybrid mediums that deliver cultural content, public information, and city branding, contributing to local cultural experiences and economic revitalization. In 2016, the South Korean government designated “Outdoor Free Display Zones” with the goal of creating symbolic urban spaces akin to New York’s Times Square. These zones were designed to enhance the urban landscape and stimulate regional economies through technologically advanced media installations. The global export of Korea’s DOOH projects highlights the growing international interest in the fusion of media art and urban branding. Reflecting this shift, Byeonghee Kim (2021) proposed the term “Artvertising,” describing the integration of artistic expression into advertising to promote both civic and commercial values. This study aims to examine how DOOH, beyond advertising, can function as a platform for public communication and urban cultural engagement. It focuses on DOOH’s potential to support public information delivery, cultural content dissemination, and the formation of urban identity. (Method) The study begins by defining Outdoor Free Display Zones and the concept of media art. It then categorizes the components and aesthetic characteristics of DOOH. Using a relational aesthetics framework, the study analyzes four representative DOOH WALL exhibition programs in high-foot-traffic public plazas. These programs were selected based on their balance of popularity and artistic merit. Evaluation criteria —interactivity, public accessibility, and contribution to urban identity—were established through literature review. A qualitative analysis was conducted to examine how these criteria manifest in each case. (Results) The findings reveal that DOOH, particularly within Outdoor Free Display Zones, serves not only as a commercial display but as a form of public art capable of shaping urban identity and offering emotional and aesthetic experiences. However, the study also identifies a key limitation: insufficient real-time interactivity and emotional engagement with the public. This limitation suggests the need for immersive technologies and user-centered design to enhance public interaction. (Conclusions) The study concludes by suggesting future research should prioritize participatory DOOH design strategies—such as incorporating AR, motion detection, and AI-driven content—to strengthen community interaction and cultural resonance. With proper design and policy support, DOOH can evolve into a critical platform that connects public art, civic experience, and digital urban development.
