Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Scenography functions as a visual language that materializes narrative meaning and enhances viewers’ emotional and cognitive immersion through spectacle. This visual mechanism induces empathy and interpretive engagement, triggering viewer response behaviors such as cognition, interest, exploration, and consumption. Prior empirical studies have confirmed the statistical significance of the causal structure among scenography, spectacle, and viewer response behavior. Building on this foundation, the present study develops and validates an evaluation model applicable to case-based analysis. The goal is to propose a data-driven analytical framework capable of systematically examining how scenographic components influence viewer response behavior through the emotional and cognitive stimuli of spectacle. (Method) The research was conducted in three stages. First, a literature review conceptualized the constructs of scenography, spectacle, and viewer response behavior. Second, three evaluation tools—Quantitative Indicators, Qualitative Indicators, and an Expert Integrative Evaluation Tool—were designed by integrating script and video analysis, viewer data, and expert assessment, resulting in an evaluation model with quantitative metrics, qualitative context, and expert consensus. Third, a Delphi study involving eight experts in drama art direction, production, and design assessed the clarity and validity of the items. (Results) Delphi validation showed that all items met required thresholds for validity (CVR ≥ .80) and reliability (Cronbach's α ≥ .87). In the first round, item scores ranged from 4.3 to 4.8 (CVR .81–.96), and in the second round all exceeded 4.5 (CVR .85–.98), indicating stronger consensus. Overall reliability was Cronbach's α = .879, with an average item score of 4.28 and CVR values above .90, confirming internal consistency. Experts evaluated the model as an effective empirical framework for measuring how visual direction induces emotional and cognitive immersion leading to behavioral responses. (Conclusions) This study developed and validated an integrated evaluation model based on the structural relationship among scenography, spectacle, and viewer response behavior. The three tools operate in a complementary manner, forming a reproducible system that measures the sequential mechanism linking visual design, emotional–cognitive stimulation, and viewer engagement. Future research will apply this model to drama cases to compare scenographic strategies, emotional structures of spectacle, and response patterns. Incorporating emotion data and platform-based viewing logs will further clarify how visual experience unfolds into emotional, cognitive, and behavioral participation, enhancing both academic and industry applications of the model.
