Abstract
(Background and Purpose) With the recent global rise of K-content, Korean dramas have established themselves as prominent cultural products in the international media landscape. In particular, the growing presence of Korean dramas on global OTT platforms such as Netflix reflects their expanding influence. Alongside this industrial growth, view er-centered directing strategies that maximize both artistic quality and commercial appeal have become increasingly important. Among these, visual directing elements specifically scenography and spectacle serve as key components in evoking emotional engagement and immersive viewer experiences. Therefore, this study aims to empirically analyze the influence of scenography and spectacle on viewer response behaviors in dramas. The objective is to provide practical insights for developing globally competitive directing strategies and for guiding production practices in the drama industry. (Method) To examine the effects of dramatic spectacle on viewer behavior, the study proceeded as follows. First, research hypotheses and a conceptual model were established through a theoretical review and prior studies on scenography, spectacle, and audience behavior as directing elements. Second, based on these prior studies, a structured and reliable questionnaire was developed and distributed to general drama viewers. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS, with a focus on testing mediation effects. Third, the empirical analysis examined how sce nography influences viewer behavior both directly and indirectly through the mediation of spectacle, identifying poten tial issues and practical implications. (Results) The analysis revealed that scenography (X) has a statistically sig nificant positive effect on viewer behavior (Y) (β = .5481, p < .001). In addition, spectacle (M) exhibited a sig nificant mediating effect in the relationship between scenography and viewer behavior (β = .4934, p < .001). In other words, as scenographic quality increases, spectacle becomes more pronounced, thereby strengthening viewer response behaviors. These results suggest a dual effect, wherein scenography impacts viewer behavior both directly and in directly via spectacle. (Conclusion) This study empirically demonstrated how different layers of scenography influence viewers' spectacle experience and subsequent behaviors. Both the visual (scene-oriented) and narrative (story-driv en) dimensions of scenography were significantly associated with viewer behavior. The effect was notably enhanced when mediated by spectacle. The visual layer stimulated emotional responses, which promoted interpretive/exploratory behaviors and economic consumption. The narrative layer reinforced both cognitive and emotional aspects of spectacle, with the strongest impact observed on interpretive behavior. In conclusion, scenography plays a crucial role in facili tating a range of viewer responses through the spectacle experience, highlighting its importance as a core strategic component in designing drama content for global markets.
