Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Ecomuseums are community-centered spaces that convey a region’s cultural spirit and environmental heritage, while aiming to revitalize the local economy and preserve sustainable traditions. Originating in France in the 1970s, the ecomuseum concept emphasizes community participation and a sense of ownership, highlighting the interconnected relationship between humans and their environment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of topophiliaand its relationship with ecomuseums, and to derive architectural expressive elements based on this analysis. Furthermore, through case studies, the research systematically examines how topophiliais spatially embodied within ecomuseums, suggesting future design directions that strengthen regional identity. (Method) The temporal scope of this study encompasses buildings constructed after 2000, while the spatial scope focuses on ecomuseums that utilize and express regional characteristics. The study analyzes the characteristics of topophiliamanifested in architectural spaces through theoretical examination and prior research. The methodology involves analyzing correlations between the characteristics of topophiliaand the factors that shape a sense of place. Based on a comprehensive review of previous studies, common characteristics and architectural expressive elements are identified and subsequently applied to the architectural interpretation of ecomuseums. (Results) This study explores the architectural relationship between topophilia, the ecomuseum, and the harmony between humans and the environment, as realized through spatial design. The analysis confirms that ecomuseums function as places where regional identity and environmental continuity are experienced beyond their physical form. The three dimensions of topophilia—perceptual (sensory experience), attitudinal (social relationship), and axiological (cultural and individual value)—are expressed through architectural elements such as spatial form, connectivity, centrality, and historicity. The perceptual aspect is reinforced through the relationship between interior and site, the selection of materials, and spatial continuity. The attitudinal aspect is reflected in the organization of circulation and spatial hierarchy, while the axiological aspect is represented through the designer’s reinterpretation of local culture and traditions, revealing the deeper meaning of place.(Conclusions) Ecomuseums, as spaces that embody a region’s natural environment, history, and cultural identity, foster topophilicattachment and empathy through experiential engagement. Architecture thereby transcends its physical boundaries, functioning as a medium that facilitates interaction between people, place, and nature. This study suggests that ecomuseums can evolve beyond conventional exhibition facilities to become platforms for emotional and cultural engagement within local communities. Consequently, future ecomuseum design should aim to integrate a region’s unique identity with an emotional sense of place, thereby contributing to sustainable regional development and the reinforcement of cultural solidarity.
