Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Modern museums function not merely as venues for displaying historical and cultural artifacts but as integrated cultural facilities that enable social interaction, and experiential engagement. By reconstructing historical and cultural memory and reinforcing collective identity, museums evoke emotional empathy, thereby establishing a distinctive sense of place. A museum with a sense of place effectively communicates historical and cultural values while enhancing visitors’ immersive experiences. Accordingly, this study aims to propose strategies for improving museums as cultural facilities that convey historical and cultural values and promote social interaction, through a case analysis based on museum spatial design characteristics associated with sense of place. (Method) This study analyzed previous research on sense of place and museums to derive museum spatial design characteristics for sense of place, which were categorized into physical, activity, and meaning characteristics. Based on this, this study analyzed five national museums in Seoul—National Palace Museum of Korea, National Gugak Museum, National Memorial of the Korean Provisional Government, National Folk Museum of Korea, and National Aviation Museum of Korea—that had been newly constructed or renovated within the past decade. (Results) The findings revealed that the sense of place was primarily established through physical characteristics, which provided the foundation for activity and meaning characteristics. The physical characteristics showed that exhibition themes were closely integrated with nearby spaces, creating a coherent sense of place built upon a shared thematic narrative. Regarding activity characteristics, the museums supported exhibition viewing and program participation for diverse visitor groups; however, services specifically designed for elderly visitors, such as accessible guidance and participatory programs, were insufficient. In terms of meaning characteristics, spatial composition and program organization effectively conveyed exhibition themes, creating immersive environments that encouraged memory recall and emotional engagement. (Conclusions) Museums should not only serve as venues for exhibition viewing but also function as social spaces that support rest and interaction. To encourage continuous visits and long-term stays, rest areas and convenience facilities should be provided in lobby floors, along with support services for visitors, including the elderly. Furthermore, integrating storytelling and experiential elements into the spatial composition is essential to strengthen the sense of place by facilitating interaction between museum spaces and visitors. This study provides directions for strengthening the sense of place in museums by effectively communicating the historical and cultural values of exhibition themes and facilitating diverse forms of social interaction. Future research incorporating user-centered methods such as interviews or surveys may yield more empirically grounded results.
