Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Despite fear being inherently a negative emotion, people actively seek entertainment activities that deliberately induce fear. This seemingly contradictory psychological phenomenon is termed the "paradox of fear." From horror films and haunted houses to virtual reality horror games, recreational fear activities have become an integral component of the modern leisure entertainment industry. Existing research has primarily explored motivations for why individuals engage in recreational fear activities, yet systematic interpretation remains lacking regarding how two contradictory emotions—fear and pleasure—are generated, coexist, and transform. Grounded in emotional cognitive appraisal theory, this study investigates the mechanisms of emotional generation and transformation within recreational fear spaces, reveals the psychological essence underlying the paradox of fear, and provides theoretical guidance for the design practice of recreational fear spaces.(Method) This study employs qualitative research methods, utilizing the virtual reality horror game Arizona Sunshine as the research context. Eighteen participants aged 21 to 35 who regularly enjoy recreational fear activities were invited to participate in the experience. Data collection combined interview methods, observation techniques, and differentiated emotion scales. Nvivo 11 software was employed to conduct thematic analysis of textual data and derive a process model of emotional generation and transformation.(Results) Research findings indicate that experiencers evoke four fundamental emotions in VR horror games: fear, pleasure, surprise, and interest, exhibiting a transformation process characterized as "imaginative pleasure - realistic fear - emotional coexistence." Prior to gameplay, anticipated pleasure emerges based on imagination. Upon entering the game, three-dimensional scenes and sudden stimuli trigger realistic fear. During the primary appraisal stage, participants experience scene illusion through reality assessment and perceive unknown threats through uncertainty assessment, thereby evoking intense fear and surprise. In the secondary appraisal stage, through behavioral adaptation, participants establish safety perception through distance assessment and acquire a sense of control through solvability assessment, whereby fear is alleviated and immersive experience emerges. Within the immersive state, fear and pleasure achieve dynamic equilibrium, with experiencers deriving pleasure from controlling the game while simultaneously experiencing environmental stimuli.(Conclusions) This study explores the psychological mechanisms underlying the "paradox of fear" in recreational fear spaces. Fear and pleasure are not merely opposing relationships but can dynamically coexist and transform within a controllable safety framework through individuals' continuous cognitive appraisal. Recreational fear space design must comprehend this dual logic, creating realism and uncertainty through elements including spatial scale, light and shadow, and sound to induce fear, while concurrently establishing reasonable spatial rhythm, controllable interaction mechanisms, and progressive difficulty levels to enable experiencers to develop a sense of safety and control. Through this approach, the optimal fear threshold can be precisely regulated, promoting emotional transformation from fear to pleasure.
