Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly expanded spatial design possibilities; however, technological innovation has not automatically translated into enhanced experiential quality. Contemporary design practices frequently overemphasize visual impact and technological novelty, while neglecting the multi-layered structure and transformative mechanisms of emotional experience. Furthermore, in the post-pandemic era, people's expectations regarding spatial experiences have substantially shifted, with simple visual pleasure no longer sufficient to meet deeper experiential needs. This research aims to thoroughly examine the compositional attributes of complex emotions in engaging spatial experiences, investigate emotional transformation mechanisms in depth, reveal underlying principles for creating meaningful experiences, and develop a comprehensive system of composite emotional design strategies applicable across diverse spatial design contexts. (Method)The research methodology employs a systematic combination of extensive literature analysis and detailed case studies, thoroughly examining theoretical foundations from emotional psychology, evolutionary psychology, and spatial design disciplines to analyze the emotional composition of "interesting" experiences. Carefully selected representative spatial design cases were analyzed in depth to validate theoretical perspectives and extract valuable practical implications. The research scope focuses specifically on public experiential spaces, including exhibition venues, museums, and cultural institutions, with adult populations serving as the primary research subjects.(Results) The research identifies and characterizes three typical complex emotional patterns in engaging spatial experiences: the tension-release pattern, alertness-exploration balance, and challenge-achievement transformation. These patterns collectively create a fundamental mechanism described as "discomfort within a safe framework," introducing moderate negative emotional elements within carefully controlled parameters to form substantially richer and more enduring experiences than pure pleasure alone. Truly captivating spatial experiences successfully activate multiple emotional responses simultaneously while effectively promoting deep engagement through appropriately calibrated cognitive challenges.(Conclusions)This comprehensive study presents a structured design strategy framework for creating meaningful spatial experiences through several key approaches: dual-layer design that integrates both physical and psychological safety elements, dynamic regulation of emotional intensity throughout the experience, and thoughtful cognitive framework reconstruction. The research effectively challenges traditional avoidance of negative emotions in spatial design practice, establishing complex emotional engagement as a crucial mechanism for creating depth of experience. The findings conclusively demonstrate that truly engaging and interesting spatial experiences emerge from the balanced interplay and dynamic transformation of diverse emotional elements rather than singular positive emotions. Future spatial design should place emotional experience at its core, creating interesting spatial experiences that both stimulate the senses and inspire thinking through emotionally fluctuating yet safe environments, multi-level sensory coordination, and deep cognitive engagement. This approach will satisfy people's growing needs for emotional connection and experiential depth.
