Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Fear, as one of humanity's most fundamental emotions, has developed complex neurophysiological mechanisms through evolutionary processes spanning millennia. In contemporary society, fear has transcended its original role as merely a threat signal to potentially becoming a positive element that significantly enhances experiential quality. Nevertheless , numerous current design practices treat fear superficially, lacking a systematic understanding of how it can transform into a positive experiential factor. Particularly in "interesting" spatial experience design, there exists an excessive focus on creating purely positive emotions while neglecting the deeper value and potential contributions of negative emotions like fear. "Interesting" experiences, functioning as complex emotional states, are fundamentally characterized by a dynamic balance between positive and negative emotional elements, with fear capable of playing a crucial role in establishing this delicate equilibrium. This study addresses this conceptual gap by revealing the neurophysiological mechanisms through which fear transforms from a threat signal into a positive experiential element, and by exploring its strategic application in spatial design contexts. (Method) This research employed qualitative research methods. The first method was literature analysis, establishing a theoretical foundation around fear emotions, spatial experience, and emotional design. The second method was case study analysis, extracting spatial design application principles for fear emotions through the analysis of typical cases. The research focuses on public experiential spatial environments, with a temporal scope concentrating on design applications from the past twenty-five years. The study focuses on public experiential spaces, examining design applications from the past twenty-five years, and limits its scope to medium-intensity fear within safely manageable conditions for adult users. (Results) The research finds that the positive transformation of fear is built upon complex neurophysiological and psychological mechanisms involving the coordinated action of multiple brain regions including the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and nucleus accumbens. When fear is strategically placed within a controllable framework, through the prefrontal cortex's regulation of the amygdala's activity, original threat signals can transform into positive driving forces that stimulate exploration and challenge, thereby becoming core elements in constructing interesting experiences. Based on Based on this, the study proposes an integrated design principle framework focusing on ‘constructing safety boundaries’, ‘dynamically regulating intensity’, and ‘restructuring cognitive frameworks’.(Conclusions) The research breaks through traditional design's simple avoidance of negative emotions, systematically revealing fear's unique transformative value in creating interesting spatial experiences. This interesting experience differs from pure pleasure, containing moderate tension and challenge, which appropriately transformed fear can provide. The findings contribute to the theoretical development of emotional design and suggest practical strategies for creating spatial experiences that are both profound and emotionally resonant.
