Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Modern museums are evolving to prioritize immersive and emotional visitor experiences of visitors beyond mere information delivery. In particular, the Folk Museum functions as a unique experiential space that fosters cultural identity and community awareness through folk content such as traditional lifestyles, beliefs, symbols, and folktales. These elements possess have both narrative and emotional qualities; therefore, effective exhibition design requires, a strategy that seamlessly integrates narrative structure, multi-sensory production, and participatory spatial design, rather than relying solely on an artefact-centred explanation. Accordingly, this study aims to propose practical guidelines for folk museum exhibition design by systematizing the characteristics of various types of immersive experiences and the corresponding exhibition directing elements, with a focus on folk experience exhibitions. (Method) By reviewing the low immersion theory and experience exhibition strategy, three immersion elements of concentration, empathy, and participation were identified, and the design structure was established by linking them with the classification of folk content and sensory directional characteristics. Three special exhibitions held at the National Folk Museum of Korea were selected as examples: "Ryong, Flying Up (2023), "One Summer Night, Dreams of the Gods (2022), and "Happiness of That Winter" (2022), and the spatial composition, sensory stimulation, storytelling structure, and interaction methods of each exhibition were analyzed in detail. In addition, both qualitative and quantitative aspects were considered through by conducting evaluation by immersion element using the Likert scale. (Results) Each of the three exhibitions corresponded, respectively, to a symbol-centered narrative type, an interaction type based on realistic technologies, and an emotional empathy-centered participatory type, findings confirmed that the immersion experience was closely connected to the integrated design of the directing medium. In particular, the organic combination of narrative, space, and sensory media served as a core strategy to induce effective immersion. (Conclusions) When the viewer's concentration, emotional immersion, and active participation are combined, the immersion effect is maximized in the folk museum experience exhibition, and the elements of exhibition direction need to be strategically differentiated according to the purpose of the exhibition and the specific type of folk content. This study can provide practical foundational data for future folk content-based experience exhibition planning and space design strategies by articulating the characteristics of exhibition direction that elicit immersive experience and presenting them as design criteria. In addition, this study has academic significance by presenting immersion design criteria that reflect the narrative and emotional characteristics of folkloric content, thereby extending prior work.
