Abstract

(Background and Purpose) This study examines the characteristics and implementation methods of a polyphonic exhibition narrative structure in historical museums, moving beyond unilateral transmission of historical facts. The shift reflects a paradigm change in museology toward a postmodern historical perspective, positioning museums as forums for discourse that recognize diverse interpretations of history and foster active audience engagement. Although the necessity of a multi-layered and polyphonic exhibition method—constructing meaning through the juxtaposition and interaction of various voices—has been emphasized, research establishing its theoretical concepts and systematic criteria remains underdeveloped. To address this gap, the study introduces Bakhtin’s concept of polyphony as an analytical framework for historical exhibitions and integrates it with Mieke Bal’s narratological theory to examine practical aspects of its implementation. (Method) The research first explicated Bakhtin’s concept of polyphony and, drawing on prior studies of non-verbal narrative environments, derived eight operative characteristics. These were then reinterpreted in relation to the specific nature of history museum exhibitions. Building on Mieke Bal’s three-layered narrative structure (fabula, story, and text), an original analytical framework was developed to enable systematic examination of each narrative layer and the interrelations between them. Using this framework, the study analyzed nine permanent exhibition halls in three history museums in Korea and abroad. (Results) The analysis indicates that the realization of polyphony in historical museum exhibitions occurs through the sequential articulation of narrative layers, producing narrative coherence. First, the content (fabula) layer functioned as a necessary precondition for polyphonic implementation. Second, the diversity of content and the intertextuality of the presentation (text) layer were closely associated, contributing to multi-sensory visitor experiences. Third, the openness of the story layer operated with relative independence from the content layer and emerged as a factor supporting audience participation within the presentation layer. Fourth, the non-linearity of the story layer exhibited only limited correspondence with the physical spatial configuration. (Conclusions) This study underscores the importance of polyphonic approaches in historical exhibitions, highlights the central role of the content layer, and accentuates to the necessity of sequential completeness across narrative layers. Theoretically, it systematizes the concept of polyphony—previously addressed only sporadically in museum studies—by integrating it with a narratological framework to develop a set of operational indicators. Empirically, it identifies the mechanisms of polyphony implementation across narrative layers. Practically, the study offers insights to inform the planning and design of historical museum exhibitions.
