Abstract
(Background and Purpose) As urbanization continues to accelerate, increasing attention has been directed toward the vital role of urban blue spaces in promoting public mental health. Urban blue spaces—such as rivers, lakes, fountains, and artificial water bodies—are widely recognized for their restorative potential in alleviating stress and regulating emotions. However, the specific restorative effects of different types of water features and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain insufficiently supported by systematic empirical research. To address this gap, the present study adopts an evolutionary psychology perspective to systematically examine the perceived psychological restoration associated with four types of water features: non-water environments, static water, fountains, and cascading water. Evolutionary psychology suggests that humans have an innate preference for natural elements such as water, providing a theoretical basis for understanding their universal restorative value. (Method) This study employed a mixed-methods approach integrating literature review and experimental research. First, relevant theoretical frameworks from environmental psychology and evolutionary psychology were systematically reviewed and integrated to construct a conceptual model of psychological restoration mechanisms in urban blue spaces. Based on this framework, an image-based experimental design was developed, using the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS) as the primary measurement tool. A total of 53 participants were recruited to evaluate their perceived psychological restoration in response to four different types of water feature images. To ensure the scientific rigor of the statistical analysis, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to examine the main effects and interaction effects of water feature types and participant groups on perceived restoration. (Results) The results revealed that environments containing water elements significantly enhanced perceived psychological restoration relative to non-water environments. Among the four conditions, dynamic water features—particularly fountains and cascading water—demonstrated notably stronger restorative effects than both static water and non-water settings. Cascading water consistently received the highest restoration scores across most image groups, indicating its distinct advantage in attracting attention, supporting emotional regulation, and promoting cognitive relaxation. Although variations were observed among participant groups, the restorative superiority of dynamic water features remained robust, reinforcing their universal psychological benefits. (Conclusions) By integrating theoretical grounding with empirical analysis, this study highlights the essential role of water features in enhancing the psychological restorative function of urban blue spaces. The findings suggest that future urban planning and landscape design should intentionally incorporate dynamic water features to maximize mental health benefits for urban residents. Such design strategies can provide more effective support for both psychological well-being and physiological recovery in increasingly dense urban environments.
