Abstract
(Background and Purpose) This study examines the sensory dimensions and temporal expressions that emerge during the regeneration of decommissioned schools into cultural spaces in the context of declining school-age populations and accelerating regional depopulation. A decommissioned school is not simply an educational facility whose function has ceased but a socio-cultural site where the memory and identity of a particular era have been disrupted. Transforming such spaces into cultural facilities is therefore understood as a cultural practice that restores community memory and reinterprets past traces into sensory experiences that support sustainable cultural use. In architecture and design, temporality is viewed as a sensory structure through which memory, emotion, and action accumulate to embody the continuity of lived time. Within this perspective, the temporality of decommissioned school cultural spaces provides insight into their spatial identity and social sustainability through multi-layered sensory structures. (Method) A literature-based analytical approach was employed, focusing on cases documented in the Decommissioned School Property Utilization Casebook, as well as cultural and artistic regeneration projects discussed in prior studies and architectural media. The temporal scope includes projects developed since 2000. A three-layered analytical framework—material, experiential, and memorial layers—was applied to investigate the architectural components, sensory experiences, and memory structures of regenerated school spaces. Five representative cases were selected: three domestic examples—Jinju Lantern Creative Center (Jinju Bitmaru), Incheon Nanjeong Peace Education Center, and Seongnam Arts Education Center—and two international cases—Tokyo Toy Museum and MoMA PS1. (Results) The findings indicate that the temporality of decommissioned school cultural spaces manifests as a multi-layered temporal system shaped by the interaction of material, experiential, and memorial dimensions. In the material layer, variations in materiality, light, and shadow reveal accumulated traces of time. In the experiential layer, movement and participation transform temporal flows into embodied experience. In the memorial layer, community memories and emotions are reorganized through institutional practices, allowing the decommissioned school to function as a hybrid cultural facility that contemporizes local identity. (Conclusions) The temporality of decommissioned school cultural spaces is formed through the convergence of memory, experience, and sensory perception, extending spatial regeneration beyond physical reuse into a cultural environment that sustains social relationships and emotional continuity. Sensory elements—including texture, gradients of light, sound, and smell—mediate time and memory by evoking past experiences as present emotions. Through this sensory-based reconstruction, the decommissioned school becomes a‘Les Lieux de mémoire’, a field of experience, and a stage of social emotion, functioning as an affective cultural space. The study demonstrates that decommissioned schools are evolving into time-based cultural environments that support regional identity and reinforce social sustainability.
