Abstract
(Background and Purpose) As urban centers face increasing pressure to balance between development and preservation, adaptive reuse of obsolete structures—including former industrial facilities and underutilized public buildings—has emerged as a meaningful architectural and cultural approach. This paradigm facilitates the conservation of embodied energy and layers of historical memory, while concurrently enabling the adoption of novel programs within existing frameworks through spatial negotiation. A critical yet under-explored architectural component in such transformations is the transitional space. Rather than serving merely as circulation or surplus areas, these spaces act as mediators between temporal, spatial, and functional layers, guiding users through shifts in atmosphere, materiality, and architectural significance. This study investigates the generation and function of transitional spaces in the context of adaptive reuse projects, with a focus on the role of architectural intervention typology. (Method) This research adopts a qualitative, typological analysis predicated on the five intervention strategies proposed by Françoise Astorg Bollack:Insertion, Parasite, Wrap, Juxtaposition, and Weaving. The analytical framework was derived by cross-analyzing the general attributes of transitional space established through literature review with the unique design characteristics of adaptive reuse. A set of five analytical criteria was established through the aforementioned process. These criteria are as follow: spatial buffering, temporal layering, perceptual transition, sensorial exposure, and directional mediation. These criteria were applied to a series of selected international and domestic case studies, each of which exemplified one of the five intervention types. The study combines diagrammatic abstraction, spatial interpretation, and phenomenological reading to evaluate the operational characteristics of transitional spaces in relation to architecture and experience across various reuse strategies. (Results) The analysis revealed that each intervention typology generates distinct transitional patterns and spatial logic. Insertion produces narrow buffer zones between existing and newly constructed structures. Parasite introduces volumes envelop or penetrate the surfaces of host buildings, thereby establishing multi-level external connectors. The wrapping method creates enveloping cavities between preserved cores and new skins. Juxtaposition accentuates seams and gaps between heterogeneous volumes. Weaving interlaces spatial, material, and circulatory systems to generate immersive, layered transitions. Across all cases, transitional spaces serve not only as physical connectors but also as architectural instruments of interpretation, memory, and transformation. (Conclusions) This study reframes transitional space in adaptive reuse as a strategic design element that negotiates coexistence, contrast, and continuity between the old and the new. By analyzing the spatial and emotional qualities of these liminal zones, this research posits that transitional spaces can facilitate a more profound engagement with architectural heritagecan facilitate a more profound experiential richness of the surroundings. Contrary to the notion of passivity or residual influence, these entities proactively orchestrate the manner in which individuals perceive, interpret, and engage with reconfigured environments. These findings suggest that future design practices should embrace transitional space as a powerful generator of architectural meaning and identity, particularly in the context of sustainable regeneration, memory preservation, and site-specific transformation.
