Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the relationship between temporality and public facility design, and to objectively prove that temporality can be proposed as a planning element of public facility design through an user perception survey on public facility design. This research was conducted through a literature review and a survey method on user perception. In Chapter 2, based on the understanding of the concept of temporality and changes in meaning in public facilities, the temporality of modern public facility design was divided into public temporality, interactive temporality, and physical temporality, and each meaning and characteristic was derived. The relationship between the public facility design expression elements based on time and public facility design evaluation items was identified, and the public facility design evaluation factors based on time were derived as publicity, interactivity, sustainability, and aesthetics. In Chapter 3, based on the public facility design evaluation factors based on the temporality derived in Chapter 2, a survey on user perception was conducted and the survey results were derived. The survey was conducted by classifying those into five types: ‘public temporality’, ‘personal interaction time’, ‘social interaction time’, ‘phenomena and changes of time’, and ‘lamination of time’. As a result of the survey, it was found that public facilities design based on temporality was generally preferred and considered necessary. Emotional vocabulary used by type was mostly positive, and ‘new’ and ‘curious’ were common to all types. As a result of the publicity evaluation, although there are slight differences depending on the type, most of the types showed high opinions of ‘sharing the same space’, ‘sharing the same era’, and ‘wanting to stay more’. Through this, it was confirmed that temporality has a significant effect on the realization of publicity. Resting facilities and other facilities appeared high in common as appropriately applied facilities, plazas and parks appeared highly as suitable applicable spaces. The time to stay was the highest in ‘phenomena and changes of time’, and ‘others’ appeared the highest in the type of ‘social interaction’ as the person who wanted to use it.
