Abstract
(Background and Purpose) This study explored how biophilic design elements within urban park environments influence the formation of place attachment among users. Traditional research often relies on structured surveys and struggles to capture the authentic, spontaneous, emotional, and experiential narratives of park visitors. To overcome this methodological limitation, this study utilized spontaneously generated online review texts as its primary analysis target. The core aim was to understand precisely the impact of nature-based design elements, specifically on users' emotional and mnemonic responses, thereby examining place attachment from a more realistic and experiential perspective. The focus on Seonyudo Park, a prominent example of ecological transformation, provides a specific context to the study of biophilic principles in modern urban rejuvenation projects. (Method) The research data comprised 80 user reviews collected from Seonyudo Park. The analysis employed an advanced text-mining method for an in-depth, exploratory analysis, utilizing automated coding to extract key keywords and quantify qualitative text. The independent variables were defined as five core biophilic design elements (water, vegetation, daylight, view, and refuge). The dependent variables were operationalized as expressions of place attachment based on Scannell and Gifford's (2010) 3P theory, including restoration, place meaning/identity, memory, and revisit intention. Subsequently, Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to statistically verify the strength and direction of the correlation between the two groups of elements, and the results were visualized using a heatmap. (Results) Statistical analysis revealed several significant relationships. Specifically, daylight (B3) showed a moderately positive correlation (r=.44, p<.01) with restoration (A1), indicating that optimal exposure to natural light is a key driver of users' emotional well-being. Furthermore, refuge (B5), the feeling of safety and retreat, exhibited the highest positive correlation (r=.48, p<.001) with meaning/identity (A2). This confirms that spaces designed for rest and stability contribute significantly to the formation of a deep emotional sense of place. Additionally, vegetation (B2) showed a weak but positive correlation (r=.25, p<.05) with memory (A3), suggesting that the park's green environment positively influenced the formation of personal long-lasting memories. Thus, these key biophilic elements are closely linked to users' affective and mnemonic place attachment responses. (Conclusions) This study empirically confirms that nature-based design elements critically influence the formation of place attachment by effectively mediating users' emotional and mnemonic responses. Most importantly, it demonstrates the feasibility and validity of identifying the complex relationship between urban park design and place attachment by leveraging users' natural language data and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, without relying on traditional, often biased, survey methods. This data-driven approach establishes new methodological potential for future research, offering practical implications for developing effective design strategies for healing public spaces and promoting sustainable city planning.
