Abstract

The Korean Provisional Government, established in Shanghai, China in April 1919, promoted the organization based on the doctrine of democratic sovereignty. Accordingly, on April 25, ‘Discipline of the Korean Provisional Government(大韓民國臨時政府章程)’ was established, and the legal basis of the various government departments was prepared. The police of the Korean Provisional Government were launched as the Police bureau by the ‘Discipline of the Korean Provisional Government’. The bureau began its official function after Kim Gu was appointed to head the bureau on August 12. Since then, the police of the Korean Provisional Government have been changed on the basis of law and system. Basically, the the Police bureau of the Korean Provisional Government was in charge of safeguarding the Korean Provisional Government and government factors and maintaining the security of the Korean community. In addition, they are collecting information and eliminate those of pro-Japanese group in charge of the task. On the occasion of the centennial of the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government, we need to look back on the history of the police, which dismissed the 1910-1945 history as a period of blank or darkness. Excessive interpretation and glorification should be avoided, but should reflect on the past calmly and seek a new biography of Korea’s modern police history from an active and subjective perspective.
