Abstract
Romance scams are a growing form of online financial fraud that leverage psychological manipulation to exploit victims emotionally and financially. Despite their increasing prevalence, existing fraud detection and prevention mechanisms remain largely ineffective due to the unique characteristics of these scams, which rely on long-term emotional deception rather than immediate financial fraud. This study applies Crime Script Analysis (CSA) to systematically examine the psychological mechanisms employed by romance scam perpetrators across three stages: Preparation, Execution, and Post-Execution. Using real-world conversation data between a scammer and an elderly victim, the study identifies seventeen psychological manipulation tactics that fall into motivational and cognitive mechanisms. The findings reveal that scammers gradually establish trust and intimacy in the preparation stage, manufacture crisis situations and impose time pressure to secure financial transactions in the execution stage and reinforce emotional dependence in the post-execution stage to sustain victim compliance. This study contributes to the literature by integrating criminological and psychological perspectives on fraud and identifying critical intervention points for prevention. Based on these findings, the study proposes policy recommendations, including AI-enhanced fraud detection systems, digital security measures, and victim-centered psychological interventions, to mitigate the risks of romance scams.
