Abstract

This study analyzed the factors influencing experiences of domestic violence by distinguishing between individual- and community-level determinants and applying a multilevel modeling approach. For the analysis, individual-level data were obtained from the Survey on the Domestic Violence in Jeju, while community-level data were collected from Statistics Korea and the Public Data Portal, focusing on social-structural indicators at the eup, myeon, and dong levels. The datasets were merged using respondents’ residential information, and a two-level hierarchical model was constructed, with individuals at Level 1 and communities at Level 2. The results showed that at the individual level, gender-role stereotypes and justification attitudes had significant positive effects on the likelihood of experiencing domestic violence, whereas perceptions of gender hierarchy and bystander attitudes were not statistically significant. At the community level, higher levels of social disorganization were associated with an increased risk of domestic violence, while institutional accessibility, such as the presence of women’s support facilities or welfare centers, was not significant. Additionally, the interaction between individual-level justification attitudes and community-level social disorganization revealed a negative effect, indicating that the influence of justification attitudes weakened in areas with higher social disorganization. This finding suggests that structural characteristics of the community play a greater role than individual perceptions in explaining domestic violence victimization. Overall, the study emphasizes the need to understand domestic violence not solely through individual vulnerabilities or gender-role attitudes but also within the broader community context. Accordingly, it recommends the development of region-specific domestic violence prevention policies and the balanced distribution of social resources to effectively reduce domestic violence and strengthen local support systems.
