This study is to examine the nature and philosophy of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and to explore a possibility of developing a Korean language course in MOOCs. Researchers in Korean Education as a foreign language who are not familiar with recent development, the MOOC is a tuition-free online course taught globally to a large number of students. It is necessary to review the previous research related on the MOOC that has recently emerged as an alternative to higher education. This paper provides a brief explanation of its birth, development and rapid growth of MOOCs. On February 5th of this year, the introductory Korean language course 'First Step Korean' was launched on Coursera's worldly MOOC platform. Information regarding the procedure of development and the state of enrollment in the course for the past two months are presented within this study. Discussion and suggestions are included for instructors and researchers who intend to design a Korean language course on the platform for global MOOCs.
