초록

This paper results from an effort to examine the possible ways to look at human history from an Asian environmental perspective. In so doing, two literary works written by contemporary Chinese authors and recently translated into English are brought to close attention: Li Rui(1950-present)’s Silver City and Su Tong(1963-present)’s Raise the Red Lantern. These two commonly deal with turbulent and often painstaking events in modern Chinse history. Interestingly enough, those historical events are frequently presented with a Taoist view about the frailty of human life as well as peaceful descriptions of nature. The juxtaposition of historicity and Taoism may appear rather ironic from time to time to the readers of western culture. Yet it turns out to be significant that such a Taoist worldview brings about therapeutic effects on the characters.

Abstract

This paper results from an effort to examine the possible ways to look at human history from an Asian environmental perspective. The juxtaposition of historicity and Taoism may appear rather ironic from time to time to the readers of western culture. Yet it turns out to be significant that such a Taoist worldview brings about therapeutic effects on the characters.
