Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore that a role of literature studies can suggest new kind of conservation theory in the anthropocene epoch. For this aim, this study approaches American nature writings which are mainly discussed in ecocriticism in terms of environmental humanities, and find examples of new conservation theory that can include human-nature complementary relationship. Conservation theory, in this study, means a perspective and practices for conservation. Given that environmental humanities have required how to respond environmental degradation, this study focuses on what literature studies play a role for this situation, argues that “engaged analysis” role can be recommendable through examples in the work, and suggests that new conservation theory can be an appropriate practice for global environmental problems. Of American nature writing, Gary P. Nabhan’s Culture of Habitat suggests new kind of conservation theory that engages interdisciplinary studies and analyses those results for responding anthropocene issues. For new conservation theory, Nabhan firstly emphasizes close relation between natural science and humanities. Secondly, he challenges the concept of American wilderness and finds new conservation theory that accepts human acts. Finally, he suggests that local tradition agriculture can be alternatives for conservation in order to secure the profitability of native people. With Nabhan’s suggestion, literature studies can play engaged analysis role of environmental humanities for anthropocene epoch.
