Abstract

There has been by now a general consensus in scientific community that we have reached a so-called the Anthropocene, whose literal meaning is "the Era of Humankind." Two important and interrelated aspects of the Anthropocene recognition with regards to our environment are as follows: first, human beings have emerged as a geological force and have brought in global environmental changes; second, consequently, we humans have a huge responsibility for keeping our global earth in sustainable condition largely through scientific and technological means. By and large two camps -- Humanities and light & dark green environmentalism on one hand and (social) sciences and new environmentalism on the other ― agree on the first aspect. Each camp, however, disagrees on the second one: the latter takes it at its face value; the former rejects it accusing science and technology as the main instigators of the first aspect and instead still crediting deep ecological ethics. Each approach should be complemented by the other, because the Anthropocene status of humans as a geological force and Anthropocene’s ‘dark ecology’indicate a want of both deep ecological ethics and a stewardship toward degraded environment from human beings. In the context of Anthropocene ecological concerns, the 123 pastoral promises integration of both approaches through its ‘oppositional potential,’ which enables an imaginative construction of a alternative vision, even though in the context of ecological crisis the pastoral has been understood to be escapist and misleading and thus dismissed as an obsolete thinking and literary genre. Charles Siebert’s nature writing Wickerby: An Urban Pastoral embodies the Anthropocene dark pastoral’s oppositional potential.
