본 연구에서는 기후변화시대의 플라스틱 이슈나 지구온난화처럼 광범위한 시공간에 걸쳐서 비가시적으로 서서히 일어나는 “하이퍼오브젝트”가 몸에 미치는 영향을 탐구하고, 캐런 버라드(Karen Barad)의 “얽힘”(entanglement)과 스테이시 알레이모(Stacy Alaimo)의 “횡단신체성”(trans-corporeality) 개념을 차용하여, 기후변화시대의 플라스틱 이슈가 바로 몸의 문제임을 드러내고자 한다. 이러한 논의를 통해, 기후변화시대의 플라스틱 쓰레기는 보이지 않는 저 멀리 바다 어딘가에 있는 것이 아니라, 바로 내 몸과 직결된 문제임을 확인하고자 한다. 지구온난화의 주 원인인 탄소 배출을 축소한다는 점에서 숲의 보존이 중요함은 두 말할 나위 없는 사실이지만, 열대 우림보다도 우수한 푸른 탄소(blue carbon)의 흡수 능력에 대한 재인식은 기후 재앙시대에 죽어가는 바다를 다시 살리는 일이 왜 우선 과제가 되어야 하는지를 말해준다. 2021년 현재 이상기후가 전지구적 이슈로 확대되고 있고, 티핑포인트(tipping point)가 지났는지를 논할 만큼 전례 없는 가뭄, 폭우, 극지방의 해빙, 산불 등이 그 빈도와 강도를 더하고 있다. 기후변화와 플라스틱 쓰레기는 이제 잠재적 위협이 아닌 현실적 위협이 된 지 오래지만, 여전히 이해관계에 여부에 따라 당파적 이슈나 가짜 뉴스가 되고 있다. 이 논문은 우리 인간이 처한 현실과 함께, 소위 “쓰레기 소용돌이”(Trash Vortex)로도 불리는 “태평양 거대 쓰레기 지대”(the Great Pacific Garbage Patch)를 소재로 한 우밍이(Wu Ming-Yi)의 소설 『복안을 가진 남자』(The Man with the Compound Eyes)를 분석한다.
Abstract
This study explores the effects of “hyperobjects”—such as plastic issues in the era of climate change and global warming—that occur slowly and invisibly over a wide range of time and space on the body, and want to reveal that the plastic issue in the era of climate change is the problem of the body, by borrowing the concept of Karen Barad’s “entanglement” and “trans-corporeality” from Stacy Alaimo. Through these discussions, I would like to confirm that plastic waste in the era of climate change is a problem that is directly related to our bodies, rather than somewhere in the distant sea. It goes without saying that forest conservation is important in terms of reducing carbon emissions, the main cause of global warming. Recent reappraisal of ‘blue carbon’ (the carbon captured by the world’s ocean and coastal ecosystems), which can store carbon much more than tropical rainforests, furthermore, explains why revitalizing dying oceans should be a priority in times of climate crisis. As of 2021, climate change is becoming a global issue, and unprecedented drought, heavy rain, melting glaciers in the polar regions, wildfire are happening more frequently and more intensively, which is worrisome enough for peoples to be concerned about whether the tipping point has passed or not. Although climate change and plastic garbage have long been real threats rather than potential threats, they are sometimes treated as partisan issues or fake news. This paper explores Wu Ming-Yi's The Man with the Compound Eyes, a novel which is based on “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” also called “Trash Vortex,” along with the reality the humanity faces.
