이 연구는 마가렛 앳우드의 『홍수의 해』의 인물들의 채식에 관한 모순적 태도를 지구정치신학적으로 접근하여, 인류세 섭생이 지향할 가치를 에코 플렉시테리어니즘으로 개념화하는 것이 목표이다. 비록 채식이 동물 복지나 생태학적 가치를 추구했지만, 가치의 대중적 확산을 위해 유연한 섭생이 요구되곤 했다. 인류세 시대 채식의 지향점을 강조하면서 대중성을 확보하기 위해 에코 플렉시테리어니즘을 개념화해야 한다. 이 연구는 캐서린 캘러의 지구정치신학의 관점으로 작품 속 생태사상과 섭생법에 접근하며, 에코 플렉시테리어니즘이 절충적이거나 현실 타협적 섭생이 아닌 비인간 존재와의 관계성을 추구한다는 점을 강조한다. 특히 아담1의 사상과 토비의 섭생은 비인간 존재와 관계 윤리, 불확실성과 조우하기, 대중과 함께 만들어 가는 과정이라는 생태학적 가치를 추구하는 특성을 보여준다. 작품에 나타난 에코 플렉시테리어니즘의 인류세적 가치는 일상 생활 속 대안적 섭생의 지향점을 확고히 하여 대중 참여를 독려할 것이다.
Abstract
This study aims to conceptualize the anthropocenic diet values as eco-flexitarianism, approaching the paradoxical attitudes of the characters in Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood towards vegetarianism from a political theology perspective. Although vegetarianism has pursued animal welfare and ecological values, a flexible diet has often been required for public engagement of these values. Emphasizing the goal of vegetarianism in the Anthropocene while securing popularity necessitates the conceptualization of eco-flexitarianism. This research approaches the ecological thought and diet in this novel from the perspective of Catherine Keller's political theology of the Earth, highlighting that eco-flexitarianism is not a compromise or a negotiated choice, but rather seeks relationships with non-human beings. In particular, the Adam One’s thoughts and Toby’s diets demonstrate ecological features such as ethics of relationships with non-human beings, staying with uncertainty, and a process of worlding with the public. The anthropocenic values of eco-flexitarianism in the work encourage public to ecological diet, solidifying the direction in daily life.
