Abstract
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, marks its centennial this year. This study examines the classic based on the ecological philosophy of Timothy Morton in order to reveal ecological aspects implicit within The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald utilizes detailed environmental descriptions to vividly immerse readers in scenes that subtly unveil underlying artificiality and ideological implications. Applying Morton’s concept of ‘ecomimesis’, this study analyzes how the luxurious imagery of Gatsby's blue gardens and extravagant parties exposes the superficiality of the consumerist and materialist American society. In addition, employing Morton’s notion of ‘dark ecology’, the paper interprets the bleak landscape of the valley of ashes as a representation of the ecological devastation caused by capitalism in the 1920s. Finally, the study examines Gatsby’s symbolic green light through Morton's concept of ‘ecology without nature’ to emphasize how it encapsulates the loss of an idealized nature and reflects the hollow aspirations of modern humanity. Thus, this study aims to demonstrate how Fitzgerald’s novel anticipates contemporary environmental crises and urges readers toward ecological consciousness.
