Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study Gatsby‘s “Greatness” in The Great Gatsby with Kant’s sublime and Deleuze-Nietzsche’s simulacra. In Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment, the sublime generates an ontological event which is not metaphysic but immanent. In sensibility of the sublime, the imagination discovers the origin and the destination of all its activity. For Deleuze, the Idea generated by the ontological event is a multiplicity indeterminate in the faculties. This experience is an empiricism which affirms the transcendental field defined by the plane of immanence. It is in this transcendental empiricism that the finite is overcome by the whole inorganic life of things. In this sense, the thing itself consists of a multiplicity which has 'the irreducibly synthetic character of sensation." In Deleuze’s sense, the work’s “fabulation” of narrative like Gatsby’s invention of his life functions a creative life in finite life time. In this regard, Gatsby’s greatness is not a personal but more importantly impersonal. This impersonal quality in the fabulation like simulacra allows us to construct the “new image of thought” of overcoming the transcendental judgment. Thus, we have to gain the force the impersonal sentimentality in impersonal event such as “crack-up” and death. So Gatsby’s death represents the crack and fall to become the other self incessantly. To become the impersonal force of the self is to become imperceptible through the crack of the event. This is the ethical practice of a life through the sublime feeling and similucral repetition. Like sublime feeling, Gatsby’s “creative passion” or “greatness” transgresses its finite limit and infinite(negative) pleasure by getting rid of fixed mental consciousness. In other words, this passion is just a process which creates an infinite ontological dimension in a finite life. Thus the greatness as a creative passion can be a pure being sensation by intensive synthesis. To affirm the forces in the immanence is to live in the univocal ontology by means of the imagination. In the background of American’s Jazz age in 1920’s, “the solemn dumping ground” represents the force to transform the present(actualization) as a rigid society such as fixed class represented by Tom and Daisy into the future and the past of the event(counter-actualization) in Gatsby’s “appalling sentimentality.”
