Abstract

New York in the 1920s which is described in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby shows the city's collage-like or montage-like, unique quality which has the varieties of its environments and residents and the complex processes of cultural plurality and hybridity. For different things and humans make a collage or montage work of New York through overlapping or layering one above the other which has formed by being thrown into the same place, and clashing, complementing, and interacting with each other. Thus in the work, New York speaks for itself vividly with the mixed voice of ambivalent and compositive city. The city which is the place as an object with varieties where different identities mix and crash, unites all of different viewpoints and ideas and invents a new reality, especially according to different geographical environments and diverse residents living in it. The city, New York develops its identity as a plural city. However as the text of city where texts intersect with other texts has no single reading or ultimate comprehension, the text of New York builds up variable scenes on and on, although it performs a scene of New York in 1920s in The Great Gatsby. For it is the city that has written its own identity as a subject by changing and developing itself ceaselessly. It desires to create and recreate itself, and it challenges a plurality of perspectives, relishing inexhaustible variety of life. With time, the inexorable growth and promising prospect of New York as the always complex and mysterious city has emerged from it.
