Abstract
This study explores the educational value and content expansion potential of the MBC children's animation <Donghae Guardians> from the perspective of ecological literacy and K-environmental education. As a narrative centered on marine creatures addressing issues such as ocean pollution, waste management, and biodiversity conservation, <Donghae Guardians> functions as an audiovisual medium for ecological learning tailored to early childhood audiences. Grounded in the ecological literacy framework proposed by Capra(2005) and Orr(1992), this study analyzes how the series’ characters and episodes visualize and communicate the five core principles of ecological literacy: interdependence, cycles, diversity, limits, and cooperation. The findings indicate that the animation effectively integrates character-based emotional engagement, cooperative problem-solving narratives, and localized ecological identity, thereby encouraging ecological thinking and pro-environmental behavior in young viewers. Notably, the repeated reference to “Donghae” (East Sea) in the title and storyline suggests potential for cultural expansion of regional identity, offering implications for soft-power diplomacy through non-political, environmentally themed media. Furthermore, the content structure is highly adaptable to One Source Multi Use (OSMU) strategies, including expansion into platforms such as educational publishing, interactive games, learning kits, and global streaming services. This study concludes that <Donghae Guardians> is not only a well-structured children's animation, but also a promising next-generation educational media property that integrates ecological literacy, cultural identity, and international public diplomacy under the banner of K-environmental content.
