Abstract

In recent Korean poetry of the 2010s, poets have increasingly employed diverse animal motifs in their work. This study focuses on the poetry of Kim Bok-hee and Ahn Tae-woon, examining and comparing the use of animal motifs across their published collections. Both poets make use of various animal figures, not merely as thematic elements but as core devices that shape and articulate their respective poetic worlds. By analyzing how the same animal motifs are rendered through distinct, multidimensional perspectives, this paper underscores the need for a comparative approach. For instance, Kim Bok-hee’s depiction of birds evokes the mythical image of the Siren, while Ahn Tae-woon’s birds serve as symbolic omens. Similarly, Ahn Tae-woon’s representation of dogs aligns with ‘Donna Haraway’s concept of the “companion species,” whereas Kim Bok-hee’s portrayal of dogs reflects a mythological and theological framing, emphasizing their role as domesticated and trained animals. Ultimately, these animal motifs invite reflection on the human condition and the position of humanity within a broader ontological spectrum. Kim Bok-hee’s poetry highlights the notion of “humans who are not gods,” whereas Ahn Tae-woon’s work foregrounds “humans who are not animals.” In doing so, both poets position the lyrical speaker in a space distinct from both divinity and animality. This study concludes that their use of animal motifs not only enriches the thematic depth of their work but also reveals the poets’ underlying worldviews and value systems, demonstrating the broader potential of animal imagery in contemporary Korean poetry.
