Abstract

In this article, we investigate the activities of the proletarian theater groups that had been active in Pyeongyang region from 1930 to 1934 before the Shingeonseolsa affair occurred. Considering the regional peculiarities of the industrial city of Pyeongyang, theaters such as Machi-Geukjang, Myoungil-Geukjang, Sinsegi and Sinyesuljwa reveal their unique characteristics. Machi-Geukjang was an independent theater group built around literary circle within the factory, Myoungil-Geukjang was a traveling theater group that pursued illegal on-site performances, Sinsegi was a theater group that tried legitimate performances, and Sinyesuljwa showed the possibility of workers theater group. These theater groups were all the successors of Mach-Geukjang and closely connected to the sites of labor movement. Therefore, Pyeongyang’s proletarian theater groups are very important in the points that they are showing the existence of workers’ independent theater group in the theatrical movement history of Japanese occupation of Korea, the process of revolution of independent theater group into professional one, and the possibility of the emergence of workers theater.
