Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine and compare science gifted children's conceptions and ordinary children's conceptions on a scientist's time use. To do those, 30 science gifted children and 57 ordinary children participated in this study. They were required to draw about a scientist's daily schedule and a company employee's daily schedule in a weekday and on Sunday. The children's drawings in the two groups were analyzed in conjunction with individual interviews. Several significant conclusions can be drawn from this study: First, like the ordinary children, the gifted children have a scientist's image as a hard and economically disadvantaged worker who is always busy and has a by-work. Second, the gifted children have more specific and elaborated conceptions on a scientist's work than ordinary children. however, like the ordinary children, the gifted children show the lack of awareness on the variety of a scientist's work place. Third, like the ordinary children, the gifted children have the conception that a scientist is less domesticated than a company employee. This study suggests that it is needed to develop and apply educational materials or scientist experience programs about scientists' lifestyles as common workers, members of family, and individuals who enjoy leisure activities, for science gifted children and ordinary children.
