Abstract

The Sewol tragedy has attracted nation's attention on treating trauma related syndromes. The recent therapeutic techniques for PTSD are more or less focusing on the mindbody interventions having realized that trauma is the physical insults as well as the mental insults. Accordingly researchers begin to examine and prove the various beneficial effects of yoga on the trauma related symptoms. The purpose of this article is to show how yoga is applied to trauma and what is required to invite trauma survivors to trauma-sensitive yoga(TSY). The principles of TSY include 5 elements; client-centered asanas, client-centered natural breathing, mindfulness, invitatory languages, and attentive help. Some of TSY's asanas are shown with detailed descriptions for the practical purpose. The evidence-based yoga therapy is now in the stage of introduction in Korea. TSY will offer us a good chance to inform the public the value of yoga therapy as a useful tool for trauma.
