Abstract

This study examines Dayananda Saraswati(Sk. Dayānanda Sarasvatī)'s view on yoga, the founder of Arya Samaj(Hindi. Ārya Samāj). In Chapter II, a brief introduction to his biography and writings was provided, while in Chapter III, his perspective on yoga was examined. In recent years, India has been transitioning from a religiously neutral secular state to a Hindu religious state. Hindu far-right nationalists openly propagate unsubstantiated assertions, asserting that yoga or Ayurveda is superior in efficacy to Western medicine and science, or promoting the notion that Western technology and science had already been present in ancient India. Their argument appears to be connected to the perspective on Western science held by Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj, asserting that the Vedas serve as the source of human civilization and knowledge, from which Western science is derived. From this standpoint, this study examined his perspective on yoga. Through this study, the following conclusions were drawn. Firstly, he divided Vidyā, which is knowledge, into Vyavahāra Vidyā, representing technical knowledge, and Yoga Vidyā, representing knowledge of dimensions transcending matter. From a Western perspective, Yoga Vidyā is seen as something that goes beyond the laws of physics, but he claims that it is never considered to be in violation of the laws of nature, and through the practice of yoga, one can harness extraordinary abilities by understanding undiscovered laws of nature. Secondly, he divided yoga into two main categories, with Rāja Yoga seen as a system of mental training and Haṭha Yoga as a system of physical training. He rejected the esoteric physiology of Haṭha Yoga, such as Nāḍī and Cakra, but did not reject the utility of Haṭha Yoga itself. He argued that one must attain Haṭha Yoga in order to achieve Rāja Yoga. His concept of yoga was not significantly different from the prevailing yoga views of 19th-century India, but the distinctive feature of his yoga concept lay in considering yoga as a practical method to attain transcendental knowledge. Through an examination of Dayananda's yoga philosophy, this study concluded that his Vedic fundamentalism, which regards the Vedas as the source of all human civilization and knowledge, is one of the contributing factors to the irrational claims made by contemporary Hindu right-wing nationalists. However, his unwavering commitment to rational perspectives and refusal to compromise on the erroneous superstitions and societal ills within Hindu tradition stood in stark contrast to today's Hindu right-wing nationalists who, for political gain, often exacerbate and exploit the superstitions and societal issues within Hinduism.
