하타요가와 현대요가라는 용어는 그 개념의 외연이 다른 것이지만 현대요가가 마치 하타요가의 직접적 계승이나 발전의 형태인 것처럼 용어가 사용되는 경우가 있다. 그래서 본 연구는 현재 서구학계의 하타요가와 현대요가에 대한 연구 성과를 이용하여, 하타요가와 현대요가의 개념을 규명하고 이 두 용어의 정확한 사용을 주장하였다. 먼저 현재 서구의 하타요가 연구 현황을 소개하고, 현재까지의 연구 결과를 이용해 하타요가의 성립과 발전, 그 개념을 고찰하였다. 다음으로 현대요가의 발전과 현대요가의 개념에 대한 최근 학자들의 논의를 살펴보았다. 그리고 본 연구는 현대요가에 내포된 네 가지의 개념(현대 하타요가, 현대의 전통적 하타요가, 현대 명상요가, 대중적 현대요가)을 제시하고 하타요가와 대중적 현대요가의 가장 큰 차이점을 사마디의 추구라는 수행의 목표에 있다고 주장했다. 동일한 점은 대중적 현대요가에서 가장 중요시되는 아사나(āsana, 體位)가 하타요가, 혹은 하타요가와 서구 체조가 결합된 형태에서 기인한 것이라는 점이다. 그러므로 대중적 현대요가의 아사나마저 그 태생의 근원에서 분리된다면 이것은 새로운 체조일 뿐이지 더 이상 요가라고 할 수 없을 것이다.
Abstract
Although Haṭha yoga and Modern yoga have different conceptions from each other, They have been used as if the latter is a direct development of the former. So this paper considered the conceptions of two terms and suggested proper use of them, using present outcomes of the Western scholars on Haṭha yoga and Modern yoga. This paper firstly introduced the present state of Haṭha yoga study in the West, and investigated into the formation, development and conception of Haṭha yoga using the latest studies. And then this paper considered the recent discussions on the development and conception of Modern yoga. This paper suggested that the four smaller conceptions be included under the concept of Modern yoga: Modern Haṭha Yoga, Modern Traditional Haṭha Yoga, Modern Meditation Yoga, Popular Modern Yoga, and that the most important difference between Haṭha yoga and Popular Modern Yoga is concerning the aim of its practice. The common factor shared between Haṭha yoga and Popular Modern Yoga is that various techniques of āsana which are the most important in Popular Modern Yoga, have been come from Haṭha yoga, or from the fusions of Haṭha yoga and western gymnastics in the very least. So if even the postural techniques of Popular Modern Yoga leaves Haṭha Yoga as it's original home, it will then be just only a sort of gymnastics and cease to be a yoga any more.
