본 논문은 한국요가의 기원과 정체성의 고찰을 목표로 한다. 한국요가의 기원에 대해서는 불교 법상종 기원설, 유영모 선생 자생적 발생설, 정태혁 도입설 등이 주장되었다. 본 논문은 기존 연구에서 제시된 이론들을 살펴보고 기존의 이론과는 다르게 장인선, 정태혁 2인 도입설을 주장하였다. 본 논문의 또 하나의 주제인 한국요가의 정체성 문제는 현대요가의 역사와도 깊은 관련이 있기 때문에 먼저 간략히 서구 및 인도의 현대요가사를 개관하고, 한국요가의 최초기 형태가 현대요가사의 어떤 흐름과 상응하는지 고찰하였다. 본 논문은 세계요가사의 흐름이 비베카난다 이후 (19세기 말) 1920년대 까지의 치유요가 계열과 1930년대 이후 크리쉬나마차리야와 그의 제자들의 체위를 중심으로 하는 미용요가 계열이 있다고 주장하였다. 그리고 국내에 최초로 도입된 요가는 주로 치유요가 계열이었음을 주장하였다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is the study on the identity and origin of Korean yoga. There have been three kinds of theories about the origin of Korean yoga : the theory of Korean buddhist yogācāra sect origin, the theory of autonomous beginning by Ryu Yeongmo who was a korean thinker in the early-mid 20th century, and the theory of the introduction of Jeong Taehyeok who was a yoga scholar of Korea. This paper insists the theory of the introduction of Jang Insun and Jeong Taehyeok. Another topic of this paper is the identity of Korean yoga which is related with the history of modern yoga closely. So this paper surveys the history of modern yoga of India and the West and then considers that which trend in the history of modern yoga corresponds with the earliest form of Korean yoga. This paper insists that there are two trends in the history of modern yoga : the first, the healing yoga style from Vivekananda period to 1920's, and the second, the fitness yoga style since 1930's in which Krishnamacharya and his student were central leaders. This paper insists that the first yoga trend introduced to Korea in the earliest period was mainly the healing yoga style.
