Abstract
Swami Vivekananda is regarded as one of the greatest minds and nationalists of India in the early twentieth century, who propagated the Neo-Hinduism (also called Neo-Vedanta, Hindu modernism, etc.) to the West. This paper aims to study his point of view on yoga, especially focusing on the haṭha yoga explained in his Rāja Yoga, and his influence on modern yoga. Until the early twentieth century, yoga had been recognized as an object of “the otherness” to the West, but due to his propagation, yoga had been taken into the Western culture. In his propagation process, he diminished the haṭha yoga as the reflection of Westernism that had a material and fleshy quality, and emphasized instead the rāja yoga as the original yoga of India which stressed the spiritual samādhi. Such a viewpoint of him has left a legacy of dichotomous thinking to later generations which contrasts a physical haṭha yoga and a spiritual rāja yoga. He also explained yoga to the Western audiences using concepts and knowledge borrowed from contemporary Western occultism and science to help their understanding. Such an explanation of yoga by Vivekananda has established the cornerstone of modern yoga, but it also encouraged the adulteration of traditional yoga with Western occultism. Since the academic studies on haṭha yoga were insufficient at that time, there exist considerable mistakes in his explanation about haṭha yoga which should be modified from the present academic point of view.
