Abstract
The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between expenditure control and consumption characteristics of adult females. By using ST-TW(Spendthrift -Tightwad) scale of Rick, Cryder, and Loewenstein(2008), adult females were categorized with ST-TW scores and monthly income levels and their consumption characteristics were analyzed. Total of 421 on-line questionnaires were surveyed nationwide for this research in February 2012. Statistical analysis was achieved by using Cronbach’α, one-way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, χ2, and Ward' hierarchical cluster analysis. The research results are summarized as follows: First, tightwads and spendthrifts groups classified by the level of ST-TW showed the extreme characteristics in terms of incomes and consumption while unconflicted consumers group showed intermediate trend. Second, all surveyed female consumers were classified into five cluster categories(low income tightwads, high income tightwads, lowest income unconflicted, highest income consumption- oriented, intermediate income spendthrifts) based on the scores of ST-TW and monthly income. Third, a total 14.01% of female consumers belonged to ‘low income tightwads’ group showed lowest scores on materialism, consumption values, excessive consumption, luxury item consumption, and financial satisfaction while having high scores in planned consumption and financial stress. ‘High income tightwads’ group which has high income and education level showed low scores on materialism, consumption values, and financial stress, high levels in planned consumption, and intermediate level in excessive consumption and luxury item consumption while showing highest score in financial satisfaction. ‘Lowest income unconflicted’ group which is young age group with low education level showed intermediate levels in materialism and difference value but low levels in hedonic value and ostentation․conformity value. Planned consumption and financial satisfaction level were low but intermediate level in excessive consumption and luxury item consumption with high financial stress. ‘Highest income consumption-oriented’ group with high education and age showed high value in materialism, ostentation․conformity value, difference value, and luxury item consumption while revealing low planned consumption and financial stress with highest financial satisfaction. ‘Intermediate income spendthrifts’ group showed high level in materialism, hedonic value, ostentation․conformity value, difference value, and excessive consumption but intermediate level in luxury item consumption and financial stress while showing low level in planned consumption and financial satisfaction.
