Abstract

What is the purpose we live for? The answer to this question that has been strongly proposed since the 1970s is ‘Happiness.’ Recent years have seen tremendous growth in research on the causes and correlates of happiness. Researchers have also begun to examine the relationship between consumption and happiness. The aim of this study is to determine whether experiential purchases, as opposed to materialistic purchases, are likely to increase happiness. We selected ‘dining’ as an experience and ‘clothes’ as a material possession on the basis of previous studies. The research design of this study includes both qualitative and quantitative approaches to data collection, including documentary analyses, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires. In-depth interviews were completed with 16 individuals three times in Seoul from January to March and from November to December of 2010. The questionnaires were distributed to a randomly chosen Internet panel during March of 2010. The results of the questionnaires yielded a total of 402 valid responses that were used in the study. The results of this study are as follows. This study finds no significant gap in consumer happiness between materialistic purchases and experiential purchases, unlike existing studies which verify greater consumer happiness as a result of experiential purchases compared to materialistic purchases. No occurrence of a meaningful statistical disparity can be interpreted as meaning that Korea lags behind other nations examined by existing studies related to the stages of needs satisfaction. Moreover, ‘dining’ and ‘clothes’ are not ideal representatives of experiences and material possessions, respectively. Based on these descriptions and analyses, the study provides suggestions as follows. First, various items can be included in subsequent studies by encouraging direct responses from respondents rather than researchers’ designation of objects under materialistic and experiential purchases. Second, this study’s partial findings reveal some disparity compared with other studies conducted in advanced nations like the U.S. Thus, more comprehensive studies should be undertaken to explain specific reasons for social, cultural, and national disparities.
