Abstract

The present study examines the definition and components of consumer happiness based on consumer perceptions and proposes new consumption categories that influence consumer happiness. In order to explore the concept of consumer happiness as perceived by consumers, individual in-depth interviews were conducted with 27 participants ranging from their 20s to 50s. To derive the definition of consumer happiness, the components included in the concept of consumer happiness were examined, and the components of consumer happiness were interpreted based on Diener's (1984) framework of subjective well-being. As a result, consumer happiness was found to comprehensively include emotional and cognitive aspects, such as the presence of positive emotions and the absence of negative emotions. Additionally, the study classified 10 categories of consumption identified by consumers as leading to happiness through in-depth interviews and introduced new consumption categories. Based on these research findings, this study proposed a theoretical framework for understanding consumer happiness from the consumer's perspective rather than a theoretical one, defining and suggesting its components, and consumer categories. As a result, it contributed to enhancing the overall understanding of consumer happiness by assisting in a broad understanding of the situations, contexts, and elements in which consumers experience happiness, thereby aiding in the identification of new ways to enhance consumer happiness.
