Abstract

Prosocial behavior, defined as voluntary behavior that benefits others, is important because it contributes to positive social relationships and individual happiness. This study aimed to investigate the effects of young children’s perspective taking, empathy, and self-regulation on their prosocial behavior. The subjects were 91 children aged 4 to 5 years from a kindergarten in Seoul. Perspective taking, empathy, and self-regulation were assessed using individual interview-style, performance-based measures, while prosocial behavior was measured through teacher ratings on a questionnaire. The findings revealed that prosocial behavior and most predictors scored nearly 70% of the maximum possible score, though self-regulation was lower at 60%. Age differences were observed in prosocial behavior, perspective taking, and self-regulation, but not in empathy. The regression model, incorporating age, empathy, perspective taking, and self-regulation, demonstrated a significant effect on prosocial behavior. When examining the contributions of each independent variable, perspective taking and empathy emerged as the key factors significantly influencing prosocial behavior. These results suggest that perspective taking and empathy are fundamental to developing helping and caring social relations. Therefore, it is essential to identify strategies to promote these traits during early childhood.
